the old days

"back in the old days everything was better". You have probably heard this sentence from anyone older than you. But was it though? By which parameters? I remember having to memorize the phone numbers of my mother, brother, aunts, uncles and cousins at 10 years old. Nowadays this is useless memorization.
Maybe when we say "better" we just mean "familiar". Change always feels a little uncomfortable. Familiar is easy and requires at one point no effort at all. Change is exactly the opposite. So, of course its gonna feel uncomfortable. The question is: Is better the same as more comfortable for you?
