Where is research going

I have the feeling that its going to change a lot with the development of AI. Until now research was done by pushing the boundaries of knowledge each single individual has. We aren't actually pushing the boundaries of what "humanity" knows but each one of us. No researcher can have the knowledge of every single field and be up on track.

However, I have the feeling that the AI development will lead to researchers having a companion by their side all the time to wrestle ideas with. And the amazing thing about tbis companion is that it actually possess the whole knowledge bandwith.
